Lynn Cline interviewed Colin on her August 14th, 2020 edition of Cline's Corner, on KSFR. Colin Keegan, founder/owner of the award-winning Santa Fe Spirits, talks about pivoting his distillery from producing spirits to making and distributing hand sanitizer and surface disinfectant during the pandemic, and other topics.
We may have had to close our tasting rooms due to COVID-19 restrictions, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped crafting cocktails. For some time we’ve been thinking about bottling a line of ready to drink cocktails so people could enjoy a delicious Santa Fe Spirits cocktail at home without the trouble of buying multiple ingredients, measuring and mixing. It turns out Coronavirus was the impetus required for us to get from thought to bottle! In May we debuted our first three bottled cocktails, all perrenial favorites in our tasting rooms: the Mesquite Manhattan, NM Negroni and the Nut Job. For June we’ve released two new summer cocktails: the Estrella and the Conexion. We have several more in the hopper; our plan is to create a bottled cocktail for each of our spirits. This line of bottled cocktails is currently exclusive to our tasting rooms for our Beta testing phase. Once we perfect the recipes with the perfect combination of taste, popularity and shelf stability, we plan to release our RTD line for distribution.

The Whisky Advocate checked in with a few distilleries to see how they're surviving - or trying to survive - in the current climate.

In this COVID-19 world it's nice to have something positive in my in-box, and it's really nice to be reminded that, even though all we're producing right now is hand sanitizer, Santa Fe Spirits is foremost a whiskey distillery! This article from Business Insider was a most welcome addition to the Monday morning emails.

As usual, Santa Fe Spirits is in good company! Maxim's list of American Single Malts gave an honorable mention to Apple Brandy Finished Colkegan, calling it "as smooth as your favorite Speyside."
Do you have an idea for something you want to create out of an old Colkegan barrel? Now could be your chance! We have twelve 2L barrels at the distillery that are in no condition to go into our barrel aging kits, so we’re going to see what else they can become.
"The preeminent artisan distillery in New Mexico — and possibly in the entire Southwest — is Santa Fe Spirits... The distilling team crafts a range of traditional spirits like vodka, gin, and whiskey — but for an unexpected gift, seek out some of the more distinctive, creative concoctions."
"American single malt whiskey sits squarely in the shadow of two behemoths: bourbon, a.k.a. America’s native spirit; and Scotch, an institution that has monopolized the single malt category for centuries. As such, forging a path in the category has proved challenging for American distillers, which are competing not only with Scotch, but with single malts from Japan, India, Taiwan, and New Zealand."
"Publishers Stephanie and Walt Cameron are sharing some of their favorite finds around New Mexico in edible’s newest department, Eight Around the State. For this issue, they searched for distilleries with great craft cocktails. The craft cocktail movement has slowly made its way into New Mexico and the distilleries are leading the way. Every batch of spirit and every cocktail these distilleries are making is truly artisanal and created by hand with love."
You just never know where we'll turn up next: Rocky Mountain Bride thought Atapino would make a great groomsman's gift (page 22). We have to agree. Though we think it would be equally good for a bridesmaid's gift, a father of the bride gift, mother of the bride gift, wedding photographer gift... Honestly, the bride should have some just for herself!
